Being an allergy mom can be terrifying. Two of my daughters have allergic reactions to bee stings. When school started this fall we went through the beginning of the year protocol of filling out forms, meeting new teachers and checking out the classroom. It also meant bringing in medication to the nurse and creating an emergency plan. We are fortunate that neither of our kids have had breathing problems because of their bee stings… yet. The scary part about allergies like this is that you just don’t know when they might get worse. So as I explain how to care for the sting, I tell the nurse and the teachers, please call me immediately, but if they have trouble breathing, call for emergency help. That just puts a knot in my stomach. It makes me want to keep my kids with me all of the time. It makes me want to not allow them to go outside. Last month our family went to an ice cream social outside, so of course a friendly little bee came over to check it out. I carefully pulled away G, one of my daughters with the allergy and waited for someone else to get rid of the bee. Just thinking about it makes my blood pressure rise and my breathing become shallow.
But just because there are dangers in the world doesn’t mean I can keep my kids with me all of the time. Even when I do, they are at risk of being stung! I can’t tell my kids not to go outside just because they may get a bee sting.
Yes, we need to be cautious when things are dangerous, but we can’t live in fear. I think that God gives us that sense of caution for a reason. But knowing to stay away from danger and living in fear aren’t the same thing.
I am the type of person who will allow fear to paralyze me. When I gave birth to my first two children, my deliveries were almost identical. When I went in to deliver my third child I assumed that I was an expert and I knew what I was doing. So, when the delivery began to feel different and the doctor didn’t make it to the hospital, I began to hyperventilate! Instead of letting my body do what it was made to do, I panicked. I struggle to make difficult decisions. So I will just wander around the house not doing anything. Scripture teaches us over and over again that God has given us wisdom and that he doesn’t want us to be anxious or to live in fear.
Isaiah 41:10 encourages us, “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
What is it in your life that is causing you fear? Are you having financial difficulties? Let that gut instinct guide you to start working proactively on your finances and then let go of the fear.
Do you have a relationship that you are struggling with? Don’t ignore it! Work on it, but let go of the fear.
Is there a decision that you need to make that is paralyzing you? Use the wisdom God has given you to make the best decision you can and then let go of the fear!
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7
