Last summer my daughters and I went to an observatory. Before using the powerful telescopes, we were given a video presentation. It began within our galaxy, teaching us briefly about the planets near us and what we would see through the telescopes that night. The teacher then went on to talk about our sun and showed us how small it is compared to other stars. As the presentation was concluding, the video continued to “zoom out” and show our small galaxy in it’s place in the universe. The presenter mentioned that ours is just one of 100’s of billions of galaxies!
I was completely in awe. Sitting in that dark room watching the videos of creation, hearing how exactly in place our planet needed to be in order for it to survive, I was brought to tears at how awesome God is. Being in nature tends to have this effect on me; I can’t help but worship God when I see the power of the mountains or the creative way God made a flower drop it’s seed to multiply. But I think that is part of why God made the earth they way he did! It’s not just functional, it is a reflection of who God is!
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19:1
As we were driving down our dead end country road last week, the song “So Will I (100 Billion X)” came on the radio. The words of this song are a reminder that God created everything and that if, like the Psalmist declares, creation will proclaim the works of his hands, then I will do that as well. We rolled down our windows to feel the breeze blowing by and sang the words at the top of our lungs.
“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:7-10 NIV
God’s creation supports our life, but it also reminds us of who God is. What part of creation reminds you of God? When is the last time you worshipped God after seeing what God made? As you go about your day, notice the details of what God has designed.
